What made me choose this internship?

As a student here at Wright State University, I had had an interest in pursuing an internship for quite some time. I had attempted to work in conjunction with the career office upon first arriving here in Dayton in the fall of 2008, but had become frustrated in my efforts to find an opportunity.

I encountered the ENG 490 course in the Spring 2010 course catalog, and contacted Dr. Bullock to inform him of my interest in the course. I initially thought that the course itself was an internship, but that was quickly cleared up.

My father is a colonel in the Air Force and through him I was able to get in contact with Bob Memering, a GS-12 government civilian, over at Wright Paterson Air Force Base's (WPAFB) Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). Bob runs the graphics department at AFIT.

Here is a brief work overview of my responsibilities as an intern at AFIT's Graphics Department:

Mr Arata (Peter) will be working with:
- Adobe Master collection including (Photoshop, Illustrator,
Indesign)
- Lightwave
- Mac X, Win XP Operating systems
- Network printers
- Design principals
- Video/Still cameras
- Craftsmanship
- meeting deadlines

Mr Arata (Peter) will produce:
- Publications
- Displays
- Graphics
- Animation
- posters
- Video

He will also deal with customers and our work order system as he works
in both the Graphic and Video divisions at AFIT.

A question that Bob posed to me was, "What do I want to gain from this internship?" I think it may prove insightful to begin to try to answer this question. What I want from this internship is some real world working experience. I seek to develop skills that I can take with me into potential careers as I prepare to enter the work force.

I am interested in developing both a professional resume and a professional portfolio (potentially of both my writing and my art). With that goal in mind. I intend to complete a minimum of 10-15 polished pieces for my art portfolio that display my range, versatility, and creativity as an artist. I will also include a variety of writing vignettes, essays, etc. to compliment these pieces and address my abilities as a writer.

The end goal being to exit this quarter with a workable portfolio that I would be happy with presenting to a potential future employer and that shows my full range and strengths as a potential employee.
